Penn Metabolic Medicine specializes in the diagnosis and medical treatment of obesity and weight-related conditions.

Obesity is a medical condition that can have a variety of causes. It is one of the modern world’s most pressing health problems. Obesity is linked to hypertension, insulin resistance, diabetes, lipid disorders, obstructive sleep apnea, arthritis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), some liver diseases and other serious health problems.

Body mass index (BMI) evaluates a persons’ weight relative to the individuals' height. Approximately one-third of the American population is considered obese, which is defined as a BMI over 30 kg/m2. Another one-third of Americans are overweight, with a BMI of 25-29.9 kg/m2, and is at risk for developing obesity in the future.

Our mission is to provide evidenced-based, multidisciplinary and comprehensive care to overweight and obese adults while fostering world-class research into the causes and treatment of excess weight. We treat and evaluate patients with:

  • Obesity
  • Weight gain
  • Weight regain after surgical treatment of obesity
  • Inability to maintain healthy weight
  • Indications for weight loss to improve outcomes of other treatments (such as orthopedic surgery, fertility treatment, sleep apnea management and many others)

Our clinical team consists of board-certified endocrinologists and obesity medicine physicians, a registered dietitian, a nurse and a nurse practitioner. We work together to help you achieve weight loss and improve health through a compassionate and individualized approach that may include nutrition, physical activity, behavior modification, medication and/or surgery. We also work closely with your primary care and other providers to treat and manage obesity-related conditions and adjust weight loss and other medications in a timely manner as you lose weight.
