When HUP East opens later this year, an intricate art installation with hundreds of glass beads reflecting sunlight will greet patients, families and staff as they enter the facility. Created by renowned artist and designer Maya Lin, who created the highly acclaimed Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C, the design draws inspiration from the shape of DNA, the extending branches of a tree, and a map of the Philadelphia-area landmark, the Schuylkill River. Tentatively titled “DNA Tree of Life,” it connects nature and medical science, representing life within the hospital. “My approach to this piece is to create something that is uplifting, that has a sense of wonder and beauty,” Lin said.
