Through the Pavilion, patient care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) is being brought to new levels. We have transformed how we organize and deliver care, using state-of-the-art technology and new ways of thinking to ensure the patient experience is at the very center of everything we do. With innovation and technology at the heart of its design, the hospital is equipped to deliver both the treatments of today and the medical advances of tomorrow.

The Pavilion integrates inpatient care spanning both sides of Civic Center Boulevard with advanced outpatient care at the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. With the addition of the Pavilion, the University City Medical District (Penn Medicine, the University of Pennsylvania, and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia) serves 1.8 million patients and visitors and is home to more than 10,000 employees working to advance the future of medicine.

"Connectivity fosters collaboration," said University of Pennsylvania President Dr. Amy Gutmann. The addition of the Pavilion cements our West Philly campus as a hub for research and innovation — a place where clinical care and science can come together to inspire amazing discoveries. Thanks to input from doctors, nurses and all other care providers, the Pavilion brings together clinicians of all kinds like never before.

"People around the globe will come here to get the care and the hope that they need, so that they can get back to their families." — Kevin Mahoney, CEO, University of Pennsylvania Health System

The Pavilion has been one of the largest hospital projects in the United States and the largest capital project in the University of Pennsylvania's history. The building itself is a massive 1.5-million-square-foot, 17-story facility with 504 private patient rooms and 47 operating rooms. However, what makes it so unique is its design, which centers entirely around patient care. The design relies on the expertise of Penn Medicine's own clinical experts as well as architecture, design, and construction professionals who specialize in health care. The end result is a culmination of years of meticulous thought, collaboration, and research about how to organize clinical care spaces to be effective for both clinicians' and patients' needs.

Located in West Philadelphia, the Pavilion sits across the street from the HUP and adjacent to the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. Bridges and tunnels physically connect all three facilities and operations to each other.
