Katherine Hartmann, MD, PhD
Medical School: The Ohio State College of Medicine Undergraduate: Cornell University Program/Specialty: Research

Birthplace: Cincinnati, Ohio

Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia

Internship: Santa Clara Valley Medical Center

Hobbies and Interests: Spending as much time as possible with my husband Chris and our sweet pup Sophie. Traveling (pre-covid era), hiking, biking, baking, gardening

Professional/Research Interests: Genomics. Radiogenomics. I love all things genomics and am looking forward to delving more into the fusion of imaging with genomics, in particular: 1) Identifying radiographic features that mark clinically actionable genetic variants. 2) Developing methodology to directly image genetic variation. 3) Leveraging imaging to better design genomic studies and further understanding of how genetic variation contributes to disease risk.

Interesting Fact: I have a twin brother who is also in medicine. He is a med/psych resident in El Paso, Texas.

About Dr. Hartmann

Kate was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and grew up in Ohio, Iowa, and Georgia. She went to Cornell University for undergraduate where she majored in Biology. She then went full circle back to Ohio, Columbus this time, as an MD/PhD Trainee at Ohio State. Her PhD work was in genomics partnering with a mathematician to try and understand how interactions between genetic variants contribute to disease heritability. Before returning to M3, she added a bit more research time as a Fulbright Scholar at the European Organisation for the Research and Treatment of Cancer in Brussels. Once immersed in clinical medicine, she quickly found radiology and was thrilled to match at University of Pennsylvania after a short diversion for a medicine intern year at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, California. As a radiology resident, she is enjoying being involved in planning both the Introduction to Radiology and How to be an Academic Radiologist Courses for the first-year class. She is soaking up as much clinical knowledge as she can before returning to a life of research during her fourth year of residency. In her free time, Kate enjoys spending as much time as possible with her husband Chris and their sweet pup Sophie.
