Inpatient care for mental health and substance use
Start your healing in an inpatient setting
When symptoms of a mental health or substance use disorder become overwhelming, seeking care quickly can make all the difference. At Princeton House Behavioral Health, you’ll find a safe, hospital-based setting for acute stabilization, crisis intervention, and dual diagnosis treatment under the care of experienced specialists. With 24/7 admissions, no-cost phone assessments, and insurance verification, we make it easier to get the help you need, when you need it most.
Specialized adult treatment programs for every stage
Your journey starts with safe, structured care. At Princeton House, we provide inpatient programs that provide stability, compassion, and expert treatment tailored to your needs.
When you need immediate, focused care, our psychiatric services offer short-term stabilization and treatment for mental health conditions. Daily psychiatrist visits and 24/7 medical supervision give you the structure and support you need to focus on healing. Much of your treatment happens in psychoeducational and therapy groups that help you build coping skills, share experiences, and support one another.
If you’re also managing a substance use disorder, you’ll receive specialized dual diagnosis treatment as part of your care. Treating both conditions at the same time lowers relapse risk and improves long-term recovery.
Withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can be difficult and sometimes dangerous without medical supervision. Our inpatient drug and alcohol recovery program provides medically monitored detox to keep you safe and supported as your body adjusts.
Care may include:
- Medically assisted treatment to ease withdrawal symptoms and cravings
- Group therapy and counseling to help you begin recovery
- Comfort-focused care to reduce stress during detox
First responders often face unique challenges because of the demands of their work. Our program, focused on first responders and mental health and staffed by clinicians and peer specialists who are former first responders or veterans, offers care that understands those experiences.
For more than 10 years, the Princeton House First Responder Treatment Program team has educated law enforcement agencies, fire departments, emergency medical teams, 911 organizations, and military personnel on mental wellness. It was the first inpatient program in New Jersey designed specifically to meet the needs of these professionals.
We provide treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and addiction, while supporting a safe return to work. The first responder wellness program also connects you to peer support groups, including Bottles and Badges, to help you maintain progress after discharge. Many first responders step down to our partial hospital program after their initial hospitalization.

We understand that there is not one path to recovery that works for everyone. That’s why we create a custom treatment plan with a wide range of proven approaches to support your recovery, including:

- Expressive therapies (yoga, art, writing)
- Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)

Seamless transition and lasting support
At Princeton House Behavioral Health, you’ll receive care that combines medical expertise with compassion. As part of Penn Medicine Princeton Health, our programs are backed by the resources and high standards of a trusted academic health system. If medical needs arise during treatment, you have seamless access to Princeton Medical Center.
Your care team includes board-certified psychiatrists, physicians, advanced practice nurses, social workers, licensed allied clinical therapists, and addiction counselors. Together, they provide the complete support you need in a hospital-based setting. And when you’re ready to step down from inpatient care, we offer full-day and half-day outpatient programs to help you continue recovery and transition back to daily life.
What to expect during your inpatient stay at Princeton House Behavioral Health
If you or a loved one is admitted to Princeton House Behavioral Health for inpatient treatment, you will be greeted by a member of our nursing staff who will assess your vital signs and health history, check your belongings, orient you to the unit, and answer any questions you have. Within 24 hours, you will meet with a psychiatrist or a psychiatric advanced practice nurse. You will see a social worker and an allied clinical therapist within 72 hours.
You will work together with your treatment team to develop a personalized care plan. During your stay, you will have access to televisions, telephones, a group dining room, chaplains, or other religious community members. Most people complete their inpatient stay in about 10 to 12 days, then continue care through outpatient services.
