PHILADELPHIA – Barbara Ann Todd, DNP, CRNP, ACNP-BC, FAANP, director of advanced practice in the department of Nursing and director of the Graduate Nurse Education demonstration project at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, has been inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing (AAN).
The AAN consists of distinguished leaders in nursing who have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to the profession and to health care. The Academy, established in 1973, provides visionary leadership to the nursing profession and the public in shaping future health policy, advancing scientific knowledge, and influencing the development of effective health care policies and practices. Academy Fellows are recognized nationally and internationally as nursing leaders in education, management, practice and research.
As director of the Graduate Nurse Education Demonstration project, Todd oversees a five-year, $200 million Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) funded initiative designed to develop new models of clinical training for Advanced Practice Nurses.
Todd’s nursing career began as a clinical nurse with the University Hospital of Cleveland in adult medical surgical units. She progressed through her career, serving in cardiac intensive care units, supervisor positions, and as a cardiothoracic nurse practitioner at the Hospital of the University (HUP) of Pennsylvania. Academically, Todd has also served as clinical faculty for the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing since 1989. In 1989, Todd was appointed director of clinical services for Cardiac Surgery at Temple University Hospital. She returned to HUP in 2003 to serve as director of clinical surgical specialists and practitioners for the department of Surgery. In 2008, Todd transitioned to the role of director of advanced practice, and in 2012, became director of graduate nurse education demonstration for HUP. Todd completed her doctorate of nursing practice at Thomas Jefferson University School of Nursing in 2010.
Todd has published extensively in impactful peer-reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Medical Equality, Surgical Clinics, and the Journal American College of Cardiology. In addition, Todd has served as faculty in numerous professional development programs, most recently “CMS Graduate Nurse Education: Lessons Learned for the Annual NONPF Conference” in April 2015 and “Cardiovascular Examination for Patients with Various Disorders” at the American Association of Nurse Practitioners Conference in June 2015.
