Chaplains
Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital chaplains Elizabeth Haralam-Shuba and Dave Brubaker are recognized for their achievements by the Gift of Life Program.

On Aug. 19, two chaplains from Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital were each presented with a certificate and an “I am Gift of Life” Challenge Coin in recognition for the support they provided to a family who generously consented to organ donation on behalf of their loved one, who was dying.

The Gift of Life Donor Program, headquartered in Philadelphia, is the largest organ procurement organization in the United States. The group adopted the commemorative coins in 2018 as a way to honor individuals who demonstrate “integrity, knowledge, excellence, commitment, compassion, teamwork and advocacy in working with organ donors and donor families.”

LGH chaplain Elizabeth Haralam-Shuba stayed by the family and supported them through their grief. She was by their side in the Emergency Department and patient unit, and escorted them to the operating room to say goodbye to their loved one. She also joined the family on the corner of Duke and James streets to witness the Donate Life flag as it flew.

LGH chaplain Dave Brubaker spoke to the family about donating, offering compassionate support during a most difficult time.
