Volunteers strike a pose on Lancaster Avenue

Penn Medicine CARES volunteers were out in force on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, joining Stomping Grounds Cafe, La Pearl Beauty Emporium, The Silk Tent, and other businesses along the 3800 block of Lancaster Avenue to celebrate King’s birthday and vision. Presby’s Lisa Younger, BSN, RN, Victoria Vardilli, BSN, RN, and Sunny Jackson, MSN, RN, joined the Lancaster Avenue business corridor’s community health fair to offer free blood pressure screenings and Stop the Bleed lessons, discuss Penn’s sickle cell disease program, and distribute gun locks.

In the spirit of King’s vision of unity, the businesses served a celebratory lunch at Stomping Grounds for the volunteers, event organizers, business owners, and visitors who happened to be getting health information.

That evening, Melissa Tuley, CNA, and Barbara Fonrose, RN, BSN, joined volunteers in serving dinner at Chosen 300 Ministries to those in need.

Penn Medicine CAREs volunteers at Chosen 300 Ministries“It was a lovely event where members of both the Penn Medicine team and the West Philadelphia community came together on a very special day,” said Tuley, who works on Cupp 3 East.

Fonrose, a clinical resource coordinator with the case management and social work teams, agreed, saying “it was a great opportunity to step out and be a part of Presby's team and serve others on MLK'S day.”

Thank you to all those who celebrated King’s legacy by giving back to our community!
