Lunch and learn

PPMC is proud to have leaders in every corner of the hospital – heading departments, serving as mentors and resources for their colleagues, and collaborating with clinical and support teams alike to ensure the best patient care. To help our staff further hone their skills and develop the confidence and adaptability needed to navigate an ever-evolving industry, PPMC’s Cultural Competence Committee holds quarterly Brown Bag Lunch & Learns that focus on topics of interest to staff across the hospital.

“Healthcare is always changing, and we’re committed to giving our staff an outlet to engage with diverse viewpoints and new ideas with provoking lectures and discussions,” said Steven Cabrera, BSN, RN, a clinical nurse in the Neuro-Intensive and Progressive Care Unit and co-chair of the Cultural Competence Committee. “March was Women’s History Month, so we wanted the lunch to focus on the incredible female leaders we have in our hospital and their take on developing as a leader both at Presby and in the healthcare field.”

On March 16, over 40 staff members gathered with their lunches (dessert was provided!) and open minds in the PHI Auditorium for a “Focus on Leadership” lecture and Q&A led by CEO Michele Volpe. Volpe detailed her path to Presby and discussed the mentors that helped her to develop her own leadership style, noting that one of the most important lessons that she had learned was to be unapologetically and unequivocally herself. She explained that when each person brings their own talents and perspective to the table, it diversifies the group and allows them to better tackle challenges.

More than 40 people attended the most recent Lunch & Learn, and the committee expects their receptive audience to keep growing. Because Volpe’s discussion of leadership seemed to resonate so deeply with all of the attendees, the committee is planning to develop a new lecture series specifically centered on leadership on top of the regularly scheduled lunches. Stay tuned for future event dates!
