heart month 2018

While heart-shaped chocolates and Valentines abound, February is focused on much more than just romantic hearts. Each year, the American Heart Association encourages Americans of every age, race, gender, and background to make a commitment to healthier, heart-conscious lifestyle choices to reduce their risk of heart failure, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases during Heart Month.

PPMC shares this mission, and we encourage you to kick off the month the right way by participating in National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 2! Show off your red outfits on the WellFocused app newsfeed using the hashtag #WeWearRed. If you haven’t created your WellFocused account yet, download the Jiff-Health Benefits mobile app and use the token “wellfocused” to register. Be sure to send your photos to mary.wust@uphs.upenn.edu too so they can be featured in the next issue of the Presby Bulletin.

As an added bonus, all PPMC employees who visit a participating Philadelphia Runner location in University City, Center City, Glen Mills, or Manayunk on National Wear Red Day will receive a 15 percent discount to jump start their fitness journey!

How else can you celebrate this month? Urge your friends and family to “know their numbers” — cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, and body mass index — show some love for the staff members at the “heart” of PPMC’s cardiac care, spread the word about the fact that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., and take preventative action yourself by quitting smoking, getting plenty of exercise, and adding more nutritious choices to your diet. Happy Heart Month!
