Princeton Heath staff members gathered in Princeton Medical Center’s Chapel of Light on January 19 to remember and celebrate the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his work, in a special event hosted by Religious Ministries and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.
The Rev. Matthew Rhodes, director of religious ministries (pictured above, right), provided opening remarks, while chaplain interns and other attendees shared excerpts from King’s sermon titled Shattered Dreams. The Rev. Samuel Yenn-Batah (pictured above, left), manager of pastoral care and clinical pastoral education, also shared readings from King’s sermon and performed on the saxophone.
The event featured four symbolic candles bearing quotes from the walls of the Martin Luther King Stone of Hope to symbolize Princeton Health’s commitment to equity, justice, freedom, and compassion. The quotes read:
- We shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.
- True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.
- The ultimate measure of a person is not where they stand in moments of comfort and convenience, but where they stand at times of challenge and controversy.
- Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.
