The Kids Marathon, a 10-week event presented each year by Princeton Health Community Wellness, will kick off this month, as youngsters across central New Jersey begin racking up 25 miles of exercise on their own with their families. The final 1.2 miles of the journey are slated to be held as a community fun run in June.
In a new twist this year, the fun run will be open to youngsters on bicycles and tricycles.
“We thought it would add some fun and be more inclusive,” said Deborah Millar, director, community wellness and engagement. “Completing the Kids Marathon is an achievement, not a competition, and we want as many young people to participate as possible. In fact, we have always encouraged children with disabilities to participate using wheelchairs and other mobility devices. This is really just an extension of that.”
This year will be the 12th annual installment of the popular event. Parents can learn more and register their children by visiting www.princetonhealthinmotion.com.
The website includes a downloadable form that participants can use to track their miles, beginning in mid-April. Any physical activity — walking, running, biking, other sports, even household chores — can count toward the total.
Community Wellness also offers kid-friendly classes in exercise, gardening, nutrition, and cooking that allow attendees to earn miles.
The participants strive to log 25 miles on their own and then complete the final 1.2 miles of their marathon on Sunday, June 28, at Educational Testing Service, 660 Rosedale Road, Princeton, N.J.
The cost is $25, but scholarships are available when cost is an issue. Call 609.897.8982 to learn more.
