President and CEO Barry S. Rabner (above right) and Christiane Schmidt, vice president, Human Resources (left) were among the first Penn Medicine Princeton Health staff members to get vaccinated for the upcoming flu season. Also pictured above is Patricia Pizzutillo, RN, from Occupational Health, who vaccinated Rabner, Schmidt and other senior leaders in early September. Occupational Health offers free flu shots to employees each year. Princeton Health initiated mandatory flu shots five years ago for physicians, employees, consultants and volunteers, with exemptions granted for documented medical or religious reasons. Exempted individuals are required to wear surgical masks during the flu season. The policy is intended to protect patients, visitors and staff from exposure to seasonal influenza, which can cause serious health complications for some individuals—notably, older adults, very young children, pregnant women and people with chronic medical conditions. Last winter, Princeton Health received a Public Health Innovator Award from the New Jersey Department of Health in recognition of the mandatory vaccination policy.
