The mission of the gastroenterology and hepatology pathophysiology course at The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine is to provide the first year medical student with a solid foundation in the physiology and pathophysiology of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, and biliary system. A comprehensive syllabus will accompany the course. Students are expected to attend lectures, journal clubs, and small group break out sessions in clinical gastroenterology and pathology. The purpose of the break out sessions is to complement material that was given in class. The intent of the course is not to provide a thorough grounding in differential diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal, pancreaticobiliary, and hepatic diseases. At the conclusion of the course, students should be well-versed in basic principles of physiology and pathophysiology of the gastrointestinal tract and liver. This solid foundation will serve them well for clinical rotations in medical school, internship, residency, and beyond.
