AERD research and innovation

Our extensive research into AERD has helped improve daily life for many people with this complex disease. Penn Medicine’s contributions to AERD advancements means you have access to scientifically backed treatments that can successfully treat your symptoms.

Shaping the future of AERD, powered by research

Penn Medicine’s experts continuously work to improve AERD care by conducting research on new treatment approaches, outcomes, and quality of life for people with the disease. Through our clinical trials and AERD research studies, we help develop care options that allow you to live well with AERD.

Effectiveness and safety of combined care

Penn researchers have studied the effects of endoscopic sinus surgery followed by aspirin desensitization therapy and daily aspirin maintenance. Our research has found that this treatment technique can safely reduce nasal and sinus symptoms, lower the number of sinus infections, improve the sense of smell for people, and reduce other symptoms of AERD.

Individualized treatments

We also study how AERD treatment can be tailored to meet each person’s needs. For example, our research has found that people age 60 and older can maintain symptom relief with a lower dose of daily aspirin therapy after desensitization.

Advantages of a multidisciplinary team

Our studies confirm the benefits of our multispecialty approach to AERD care. A skilled sinus surgeon and experienced allergist working closely together in a single center, like at the Penn AERD Center, leads to better outcomes compared with treatment from specialists at two separate centers.

Sustained clinical outcomes and long-term success

Penn researchers have followed up with people who received treatment for AERD at our center. They reported lasting symptom relief and a reduction in sinus disease. In one study, the positive effects continued more than two years later. Our research also found an exceptionally low rate of revision surgeries.
