Our program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania has a total of 28 residents, seven in each year of a four year program. We are very proud of our diverse group of committed and talented trainees.
The residents spend the majority of their time at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Additional clinical sites include Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and Veterans Administration of Philadelphia which are both in close proximity. While the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania acts as a regional and national referral center we also provide care to the under-served West Philadelphia community through the Helen O. Dickens Center for Women.
The clinical programs continue to grow; last year we performed over 3,800 deliveries, over 2,100 surgical procedures and approximately 120,000 outpatient visits. The department has 60 full-time faculty and a number of midwives and certified clinical nurse practitioners who work with the residents.
We offer residents a broad range of clinical opportunities for training in all aspects of general obstetrics and gynecology and the following sub-specialties:
The curriculum is designed to provide clinical and other educational opportunities to residents with appropriately increasing autonomy and responsibility through the four years of training. Our program prepares residents for practice as specialists in general obstetrics and gynecology or for sub-specialty fellowship training. In addition to clinical training, we have a formal Resident Research Program that provides residents with research training and mentorship. Senior residents participate in Leadership Skills Training. While career paths after residency are varied, residents are equipped with skills necessary for a successful academic career.
