Comprehensive obstetric services for all expectant parents
Penn Medicine provides complete maternity care by experienced obstetricians for all pregnant people, regardless of insurance status. From prenatal care to labor and delivery to postpartum recovery and beyond, you receive compassionate care from dedicated maternity specialists. In addition, patients can receive bilingual medical support in all of our OB/GYN clinics and hospitals.
Dr. Dickens was the first board-certified female African American OB/GYN specialist in Philadelphia and fellow of the American College of Surgeons. The Helen O. Dickens Center for Women, located at HUP, honors her legacy by serving a diverse community in Philadelphia. Our providers offer expert prenatal and gynecology care for everyone. At Penn Medicine, experienced specialists provide critical neonatal care for newborns who arrive early or need special attention in Level III neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Babies can survive and thrive in our facilities that have been recognized for excellence by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). Our team supports you and your baby in the hospital and prepares you to care for your infant when they’re ready to go home.
Families experiencing the loss of a pregnancy or newborn are never alone. We support you with perinatal palliative care services and a care team to help you through the grieving process. You receive compassionate, personalized guidance through pregnancy, delivery, and end-of-life care, as well as ongoing support from our bereavement coordinator.

We offer comprehensive labor and delivery services at six Penn Medicine hospitals, ensuring you have a choice in where and how you deliver. From private birthing suites to expert support for high-risk pregnancies and premature babies, we prioritize your comfort, health, and safety.
You have access to a full range of pain management options, or we can support you through a natural childbirth. We also offer fully equipped operating rooms for cesarean sections. Our lactation consultants are on hand to help you begin breastfeeding, while our nurses help you recover and learn to care for your baby.
Certified nurse midwives
We support your choice in pregnancy care. Our midwifery services help enable you to experience childbirth with limited interventions. You’ll work together to create a birth plan that supports your childbirth goals.
