Penn Medicine community health fair returns to West Philly June 28
The fifth annual event offers free health screenings, mental health resources, eye exams, and more; walk-in mammograms available June 24 through July 1.
On Sunday, June 28, West Philadelphia residents and their neighbors are invited to Penn Medicine’s fifth annual community health fair at Community of Compassion CDC, 6150 Cedar Ave. The event will offer free health screenings and educational resources, plus free food, raffle prizes, and activities for all ages, continuing Penn Medicine’s commitment to bringing health care and prevention resources directly into the community.
The Penn Medicine mobile mammogram van will provide walk-in mammograms at the June 28 health fair and at Fresh Grocer of Upper Darby June 24–27 and June 29–July 1. Mammograms will not be available at Fresh Grocer on June 28. Attendees should bring an insurance card and ID if available. Insurance will be billed when applicable, but no one will be turned away for lack of insurance.
Free health screenings for mind and body
“There’s an incredible sense of energy and engagement at this event every year, and it’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we meet people where they are,” said lead organizer Linda White Nunes, MD, MPH, a professor of Clinical Radiology and vice chair for Community Health for the department of Radiology in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. “Seeing both familiar and new faces each year reflects the trust this event has built in West Philadelphia and why it matters to keep showing up with services people need.”
At the health fair, Penn Medicine experts will offer breast cancer screenings (mammograms), take-home colon cancer screening kits, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests for prostate cancer screening, lung cancer risk assessments, HPV self-sampling for cervical cancer screening, liver and vascular ultrasounds, eye health screenings and free glasses, throat cancer screenings, screenings for diabetes and hypertension, and mindfulness resources. Individuals interested in liver health screening should fast for three hours before the ultrasound.
Mammograms and liver and vascular ultrasounds are supported by Siemens Healthineers. If a mammogram or other screening shows an abnormal result, Penn Medicine will help connect that individual with appropriate follow-up care and resources.
Continued commitment to making care accessible
Penn Medicine has partnered with Siemens Healthineers to host annual community mammogram events since 2021, with the West Philadelphia health fair at Community of Compassion serving as a key hub for screening and outreach over the past five years. This effort brings cancer screening and prevention services directly into neighborhoods where barriers to care can delay early detection. The goal of screening exams is to find health issues, including cancer, at early stages, when they’re most likely to be treated successfully.
Upwards of 2,000 people have participated in the health fair since 2022. Last year’s event marked the debut of Penn Medicine’s mobile mammogram van, which has been traveling to community events across the greater Philadelphia area over the past year. In the mammogram van’s first year of operations, more than 40 percent of mammograms provided have been to uninsured patients. “Expanding access to preventive services is critical to achieving more equitable health outcomes,” said Carmen E. Guerra, MD, the Ruth C. and Raymond G. Perelman Professor and associate director for Community Outreach and Engagement at Abramson Cancer Center. “Early detection saves lives, and bringing these resources into the community ensures more individuals have the opportunity to benefit from them. This work reflects the Abramson Cancer Center’s broader mission to partner with the communities we serve and extend high-quality cancer prevention and screening beyond the walls of our health system.”
