Balloons and signs on Founders 9 celebrated the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)’s homecoming to a refreshed unit.

As soon as the Pavilion opened at the end of October 2021, reconfigurations to HUP Main began in earnest. Some patient care units have been permanently moved to newly refreshed locations. Others have been temporarily moved while their units were updated. And additional moves will continue to the end of the fiscal year. At that time, HUP Main will have all private patient care rooms with surgical and the majority of the medical units grouped according to patient populations.

What was involved in pulling together this massive project, right on the heels of the Pavilion opening? How were the best locations for all specialties determined? How did support services – such as Environmental Services and Bed Management – keep up with the relocations? And most important, in the midst of all the moves, how did health care teams ensure that patient care flowed smoothly the whole time? You’ll learn all this and more – including reflections on a unit which was home to surgical patients since 1978 and is now “retired” – in an upcoming issue of HUPdate.
