A certified nurse-midwife is an experienced registered nurse who has completed an accredited education program in nurse-midwifery and has passed a national certifying exam. At Penn Medicine, all midwives are certified nurse-midwives. They can provide routine gynecological care, as well as prenatal, labor and delivery, and postpartum care for healthy women with uncomplicated pregnancies.
Penn's nurse-midwives believe that birth is a natural and normal process. They take a personal approach to childbirth, stressing the importance of educational and emotional support for parents. Your nurse-midwife will provide you with comprehensive care, including childbirth education, nutrition and exercise counseling, breastfeeding instruction and early parenting information.
Penn nurse-midwives provide the full spectrum of care for moms and babies before, during and after childbirth.
