Urologic cancer care
Leading the way in urologic cancer care
Our urology cancer specialists treat a high number of patients each year—well above the national average. They’ve also helped develop some of today’s standard GU and urologic cancer treatments, such as targeted therapy. This deep level of expertise and experience helps our patients receive excellent outcomes.
Some cancer programs have doctors who specialize in GU cancers overall or treatment areas, like radiation. But at Penn Medicine, our experts have narrowed their specialties even further. For example, we have medical oncologists who subspecialize in kidney cancers and one of the only radiation oncologists in the United States who subspecializes in bladder cancer. Because they live and breathe their area of focus, you receive care from doctors who have seen it all—and use their experience to create effective treatment plans.
A tumor board involves cancer specialists who meet regularly to discuss individual cases and improve care. Our GU Oncology Tumor Board brings together all the specialists involved in GU and urologic oncology. Our patients benefit from a team of world-class experts—including urologic oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, and geneticists—all weighing in. Together, the team creates treatment plans that consider every option and provide creative solutions to difficult problems.
Some GU and urological cancers are passed down through families. Genetic specialists and counselors in our Translational Medicine and Human Genetics program help you understand your personal risks. They also work with you and your urology cancer center doctors to make better care decisions.
Cancers we treat
Types of cancers treated by urologic specialists
Genitourinary (GU) refers to the genital and urinary organs. GU oncology treats cancers of the urinary system, such as bladder and kidney cancer. It also treats reproductive cancers found in those assigned male at birth, such as prostate and testicular cancer. On the other hand, gynecologic oncology specializes in cancers of the reproductive organs typically found in those assigned female at birth, such as uterine or ovarian cancer. GU oncology and urologic oncology overlap, with urologic oncology specifically addressing cancers that start in the urinary organs.
Advanced GU and urologic cancer treatments
GU and urologic cancer care are rapidly evolving, with new treatments continually being introduced. At Penn Medicine, we provide the latest advancements to ensure you receive the best possible results.
Urologic cancer care on your terms
Cancer comes with enough concerns—but how you’ll manage treatment doesn’t have to be one of them. Your Penn Medicine care team actively searches for ways to make your cancer journey easier to manage.
- Appointments at home: Our Penn Medicine Connected Health Virtual Visit program allows you to securely connect with your provider on your personal computer or mobile device so you can get care from the comfort of your home.
- Treatment near you: We have a network of centers throughout the southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey regions where you can get radiation and chemotherapy treatments.
- Guidance through the process: Some of our hospitals have an oncology nurse navigator who specializes in GU and urologic cancers. They’ll make sure you quickly get any appointments you need for tests and consultations. After each appointment, our team takes time to make sure you understand your options.
- Focus on survivorship: Urologic cancer survivors gain valuable support by connecting with others who have faced similar challenges. Our cancer survivorship program offers a space to share experiences, receive guidance, and find support as you navigate life after treatment, promoting a comprehensive approach to your ongoing well-being and recovery.
