Our history

Lancaster General Hospital served its first patient in 1893 in a small row home on North Queen Street in Lancaster City.

Since that time, we have grown to become Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, a nonprofit health system recognized for innovative and compassionate care, with local access to some of the world’s most advanced research and clinical trials.

From primary care to the most advanced cancer, cardiology, neurology and surgical specialty services, Lancaster General Health offers patients in Central Pennsylvania a comprehensive network of advanced medicine.

Deeply rooted in our community, we maintain a strong focus on wellness and prevention, reaching beyond our walls to address a wide variety of issues that impact the health and well-being of everyone in our region. Advancing health equity is a foundational component of Lancaster General Health’s ongoing efforts to make Central Pennsylvania the healthiest community to live.
