Urogynecologic surgery and pelvic reconstruction
Innovative surgical expertise to restore pelvic health
For some urogynecologic conditions, surgery may be the best option to improve your health and quality of life. At Penn Medicine, our urogynecologists perform a wide range of surgical procedures to improve or restore pelvic health when dealing with conditions like prolapse and urinary incontinence.
Our experienced surgeons use minimally invasive techniques to repair your pelvic floor, which reduces scarring and quickens your recovery. We also have extensive training in robotic pelvic floor surgery, so you can be confident in our knowledge and expertise.
Conditions we treat
Permanent solutions for bladder dysfunction and incontinence
Our expert urogynecologic surgeons offer several surgeries and procedures to treat urinary incontinence. We use advanced, minimally invasive approaches to help you recover faster and reduce the risk of complications.
The full range of urogynecologic surgery
Our surgeons perform various advanced procedures to restore function and anatomy. Your provider will help you determine which surgical option is most appropriate for your specific condition:
- Robotic sacrocolpopexy to correct bladder, bowel, or uterine prolapse
- Hysterectomy combined with reconstructive repairs for uterine prolapse
- Sling, suspension, and mesh procedures to address incontinence
- Neuromodulation device implantation to manage bladder dysfunction
- Uterine-sparing surgeries to correct prolapse while leaving the uterus in place
- Vaginal prolapse repair to strengthen vaginal wall against prolapse
Our approach to pelvic reconstructive surgery
At Penn Medicine, we specialize in technology-assisted, minimally invasive surgical solutions designed to repair the muscles and connective tissue of the pelvic floor. Whether utilizing your own tissue, donor tissue, or specialized surgical materials, we prioritize a personalized approach to restore pelvic function and help you feel like yourself again.
Our urogynecologists have years of training and experience in laparoscopic, robotic-assisted, and vaginal approaches. We use state-of-the-art robotic technology to enhance surgical precision, allowing for smaller, more controlled movements.
Minimally invasive techniques reduce scarring and quicken your recovery. When possible, your surgeon will use the least invasive approach to help you recover faster and reduce the risks of complications.
We collaborate with other Penn Medicine experts, including pelvic health physical therapists, colon and rectal surgeons, and gynecologists. You receive care from an expert team focused on restoring your pelvic health before, during, and after surgery.
If you need to have a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), your provider may recommend doing it at the same time as your pelvic repair to treat uterine prolapse and provide long-term support for the vagina.
While it can take up to six weeks to feel back to normal, we see you for a follow-up within two weeks to ensure you are healing well. Your provider will provide guidance on decreasing activity and managing medications.
