Our approach to pelvic reconstructive surgery
At Penn Medicine, we specialize in technology-assisted, minimally invasive surgical solutions designed to repair the muscles and connective tissue of the pelvic floor. Whether utilizing your own tissue, donor tissue, or specialized surgical materials, we prioritize a personalized approach to restore pelvic function and help you feel like yourself again.
Our urogynecologists have years of training and experience in laparoscopic, robotic-assisted, and vaginal approaches. We use state-of-the-art robotic technology to enhance surgical precision, allowing for smaller, more controlled movements.
Minimally invasive techniques reduce scarring and quicken your recovery. When possible, your surgeon will use the least invasive approach to help you recover faster and reduce the risks of complications.
We collaborate with other Penn Medicine experts, including pelvic health physical therapists, colon and rectal surgeons, and gynecologists. You receive care from an expert team focused on restoring your pelvic health before, during, and after surgery.
If you need to have a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), your provider may recommend doing it at the same time as your pelvic repair to treat uterine prolapse and provide long-term support for the vagina.
While it can take up to six weeks to feel back to normal, we see you for a follow-up within two weeks to ensure you are healing well. Your provider will provide guidance on decreasing activity and managing medications.
