Speech therapy
Reclaim your voice, communication, and confidence
Speech therapy can improve communication, swallowing, breathing, and overall quality of life for people affected by a wide range of conditions. At Penn Medicine, our speech therapists care for children and adults with speech, voice, language, cognitive, airway, and swallowing disorders related to neurological conditions, ENT conditions, injury, cancer treatment, and other complex medical issues.
Our team uses the latest research-backed techniques to address problems with voice and speech, airway, and swallowing. We provide evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation for people recovering from stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), spinal cord trauma, head and neck cancer, and surgery. We care for people with progressive neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease. We also support professionals who rely on their voice, including singers, actors, teachers, and public speakers.
Penn Medicine offers speech therapy at convenient locations throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Services are available within and near our Chester County Hospital, Doylestown Health, Lancaster General Health, Princeton Health, and Philadelphia hospital locations. In the Philadelphia area and surrounding suburbs, including Bucks County, Montgomery County, and southern New Jersey, additional speech therapy services are provided in partnership with GSPP Rehabilitation.
Speech therapy and rehabilitation services
Speech therapy services are available in both inpatient and outpatient settings, allowing us to support you during hospitalization and throughout your recovery. Treatment plans are tailored to your condition and may include exercises, behavioral strategies, assistive communication tools, voice retraining, swallowing therapy, and education for both patients and caregivers. Our speech-language pathologists address a variety of issues to help you build key skills and achieve your highest level of function.
We evaluate you thoroughly to gain a comprehensive view of your needs. Our team works closely with specialists across many areas of medicine, including otorhinolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons, oncologists, and others, to deliver coordinated, personalized care.
Designed for non-native speakers with a strong command of English, our program includes a comprehensive evaluation and speech analysis to guide a personalized treatment plan. Over seven to 12 weeks, therapy focuses on improving speech clarity and confidence in personal, academic, and professional settings. Treatment focuses on pronunciation, rhythm, pacing, and communication strategies.
Speech therapy can help people with airway disorders improve breathing patterns and reduce symptoms. Therapy may include breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and strategies to support safer, more effective airflow.
Gender-affirming voice therapy supports people seeking a voice and communication style that better aligns with their gender identity. Treatment may focus on pitch, resonance, vocal quality, speech patterns, and communication techniques in a supportive environment.
We help infants and children with feeding disorders, swallowing disorders, or avoidant or restrictive food intake disorders find the best techniques and methods to ensure adequate nutrition and hydration. We partner with the child’s caregivers to incorporate dietary preferences, achieve age-appropriate eating skills, prevent future eating struggles, and improve quality of life.
Swallowing therapy helps people experiencing difficulty swallowing due to neurological conditions, cancer treatment, surgery, injury, or other medical issues. Treatment may include exercises, swallowing strategies, dietary recommendations, and techniques to improve safety and comfort while eating and drinking.
Professional voice users, including singers, teachers, attorneys, performers, and public speakers, may benefit from specialized voice rehabilitation and retraining. Therapy focuses on improving vocal function, reducing strain, and supporting vocal endurance and performance.
Speech therapists treat a wide range of speech, language, cognitive, and voice disorders related to neurological conditions, developmental disorders, injury, and other medical conditions. Therapy may help improve speech clarity, communication skills, memory, attention, voice quality, and overall communication function.
