Dr. Anderson's research focuses on identifying clinical and molecular risk factors for neurocognitive impairment and other organ dysfunctions in critical illness. Dr. Anderson oversees Penn's cohort study of delirium and cognitive impairment in sepsis survivors. Current studies focus on 1) the role of systemic markers of cerebral injury to identify survivors at high risk of neurocognitive impairment, and 2) neuronal excitotoxicity as a mechanism of neuronal death and neurocognitive impairment in sepsis survivors. Dr. Anderson also collaborates with Dr. Nuala Meyer, Dr. John Reilly and Dr. Michael Shashaty on epidemiologic and molecular studies of acute respiratory distress syndrome and acute kidney injury in critically ill patients.
