I am Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. I currently serve as Chief of Gastroenterology at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Vice-Chief for Clinical Research in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and Director of an NIH-funded T32 Training Grant in GI Epidemiology.
I have been a gastroenterologist and clinical investigator for nearly three decades. My clinical expertise is in the management of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Some cornerstones of my philosophy toward the care of patients with inflammatory bowel disease include the following:
- It is important for me to understand what aspects of my patient’s disease is most impacting their life and to look for solutions to these aspects.
- When possible, treatment decisions should be based on the best possible evidence.
- Shared decision making requires that I provide my patients with understandable information about complex situations. Shared decision making also requires that I understand my patients’ perspectives, goals and fears.
- It is important to revisit decisions that were made in the past to ensure it remains the correct decision today.
Yesterday’s research improved the care I can provide for patients with IBD today. As such, it is important that my patients have the opportunity to participate in today’s research so that the IBD care of the future will be even better. My own research focuses on the epidemiology of inflammatory bowel diseases and clinical trials.
Much of my research has been related to nutritional interventions for patients with IBD and to understanding factors that are associated with both favorable and undesirable outcomes.
