Dr. Farzana Rashid (Hossain) is a Professor and a Gastroenterologist at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, with subspecialty expertise in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Women’s GI Health, and Transitional Care for adolescents entering adulthood. She is also the Program Director for Women's Gastrointestinal for Penn Medicine.

Dr. Rashid (Hossain) has been involved with the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation since joining Penn Medicine in 2010, serving on the Board and the Chapter Medical Advisory Committee for the Philadelphia/Delaware Valley chapter, as well as serving as a member of the National Patient Education Committee. Dr. Rashid (Hossain) has dedicated her career to educate and advocate for patients while providing quality clinical care for patients with IBD and General GI disorders. Through her role as Director of Women’s GI Health along with Dr. Levin in Urogynecology and Dr. Saur in colorectal surgery, she cofounded the unique Penn Women’s FIRST multidisciplinary clinic launched in 2021 to help coordinate care for female patients with pelvic floor disorders. In addition, building on her lifelong commitment to improving health and serving the community through science and social empowerment, Dr. Rashid (Hossain) was appointed to the City of Philadelphia’s First “Commission for Women” by Mayor Kenney in 2016 until Jan 2024. She also serves on the Board of Trustees at the Self-Freedom Foundation, a philanthropic organization that targets and sponsors high impact projects in the areas of child education, social entrepreneurship, and critical healthcare in the developing countries.

Dr. Rashid (Hossain) has received numerous awards for her contribution to healthcare and the community, including the 2026 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation Gold Medallion Award 2020, Women of Distinction Award from Philadelphia Business Journal, the Healthcare Hero Award and the Radhika Srinivasan Award for Humanism and Professionalism from Penn Medicine GI, Top Doctor Awards and Exceptional Women in Medicine Award from Castle Connolly Medical, Top 25 Emerging Leaders Award from ModernHealthcare, Rising Stars in Healthcare from Becker’s Healthcare, and Top Docs from Philadelphia Magazine. She has often appeared as an invited speaker to many healthcare innovation conferences, lectures on the advances of IBD, events for mentoring professionals and young leaders, etc. She has authored publications, including peer reviewed journal articles, and has co-authored chapters in different medical textbooks.
