Doylestown Hospital emergency room transfer frequently asked questions (FAQs) 

Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania: Patients and visitors are encouraged to park in the 3600 Civic Center Boulevard parking garage or the Clifton Center for Medical Breakthroughs Parking Garage. A free shuttle is available from the 3600 Civic Center Boulevard garage’s Level 2 transportation center to the Perelman Center, the Clifton Center, and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Please do not park in the Perelman Center garage, which is only for Perelman Center patients. Get directions.

Penn Presbyterian Medical Center: Convenient parking is available in our parking garage between Filbert Street and Powelton Avenue. Access the main entrance to the garage on Filbert Street. Patients receive reduced parking rates. The garage is open 24/7. Get directions.

Both HUP and Penn Presbyterian are about 1 hour away from Doylestown Hospital. Visitors and family must provide their own transportation.

The SEPTA Regional Rail station, 130 S. Clinton Street, Doylestown is a 6-minute drive from Doylestown Hospital.

Upon arrival at either HUP or Penn Presbyterian, Red Coat Ambassadors provide maps, wayfinding guidance, patient and visitor escorts, wheelchair and walking support, and general information about the hospital to patients and visitors. Find an Ambassador at the welcome desk in the lobby and throughout the hospitals.

We aim to get you to the hospital you’re transferring to within two hours. An ambulance will pick you up from Doylestown Hospital. If you choose to go to another Penn Medicine hospital, you will go directly to your inpatient room. You will not be expected to stop in another Emergency Department and wait longer

We do not want to increase your wait time. We also want to be sure you stay within the Penn Medicine system giving all providers and facilities access to your medical records.

At HUP, all rooms are private. Most floors at Penn Presbyterian offer private rooms, but not all.

Yes. If you choose to be transferred to another Penn Medicine hospital, your care team will include Penn Medicine providers.

Yes. Penn Medicine’s hospitals have subspecialists on staff. Penn Presbyterian has a Level 1 Trauma Center with additional advanced care options.  

Yes. All Penn Medicine doctors will receive your electronic medical records. They will know that you were transferred. Your inpatient care team will also connect with your outpatient health care providers, as needed.

No. Your insurance coverage will not be affected.

No. You will not be charged more for the care you receive if you choose to go to a different Penn Medicine hospital in Philadelphia.   

No. You do not need to return to Doylestown Hospital after you are discharged.

You will not return to the hospital/emergency room you started in unless you need to pick up your car. The hospital you are discharged from can help coordinate transportation to get to your vehicle.
