Each quarter, the Penn Medicine CAREs Grant program invites LG Health employees and Medical & Dental Staff members to apply for grants on behalf of a not-for-profit organization for which they volunteer.

LG Health is proud to have two Penn Medicine CAREs Grant recipients for the fall 2019 quarter.

Rebecca Wilson Griffith, RN-BSN, Emergency Medicine, applied on behalf of Milagro House. The organization provides housing, education and support services for women and their children who would otherwise be homeless. In addition, Milagro House provides free CPR classes for their clients, because many are required to have their CPR certification for educational programs and jobs they pursue. Wilson Griffith’s grant will be used to purchase the necessary equipment and materials for those classes.

“This grant gives us an opportunity to provide CPR education for free, which is a huge asset and empowers the women who use Milagro House services,” explained Wilson Griffith.

Miriam Ortega, customer service specialist, Healthy Beginnings Plus, received a grant for San Juan Bautista Plaza, a youth and cultural center serving Lancaster City families in need of afterschool program support, free household items, food and housing.

Ortega’s funds will enable the organization to build an awning over the entrance where individuals enter the thrift store, shielding them from the elements.

“The funds from the grant help us make the place more functional for the people who use it. I have been so blessed, and I love that I am able to serve others through this program,” shared Ortega.
