Demolition has begun of the building at 3910 Powelton Ave. to make room for the new parking garage.

Work on the new PPMC parking garage is moving along. Demolition of the vacant building at 3910 Powelton Avenue should be complete by February to make room for the new structure, said Bob Russell, MS, FACHE, associate executive director for Operations.

“We started at the top and are taking it down piece by piece,” Russell said. “Then we start building the new garage.”

Targeted for completion in Summer 2023, the 1,438-space garage will accommodate all staff, patient, and visitor parking. It will also have a covered pathway to the hospital. Once that’s finished, the existing hospital garage on the other side of campus, which has 400 spaces, will be torn down.

During the construction process, about 260 monthly parkers have been relocated from the 3910 lot to alternate lots.

“The future is coming,” Russell said. “We know there will be some short-term pain, but the long-term progress for the organization will be significant. In 18 months, we’ll have a brand new parking garage, and everyone who wants to have a space will be able to park on campus.”
