More than 200 people turned out on June 25 for HUP’s Community Day health fair in Malcolm X Memorial Park, featuring exercise classes, cooking demonstrations, CPR and overdose reversal training, and much more. There were nearly 30 tables, half of which were staffed by Penn Medicine groups, and the others by community health organizations helping to raise health awareness. The hospital gave out 350 Narcan overdose-reversal kits, with Prevention Point providing training on how to use them. The cooking demos by HUP Food Services staff on how to make healthy dishes like kale chickpea salad, using ingredients that could be found at a dollar store, were a big hit, as were the produce giveaways by Philabundance, said Sofia Carreno, MSN, HUP’s nursing professional development specialist for community engagement, who co-led the fair with Patient Education Specialist Andrea Blount, MPH, BSN.

“It was a great day,” Carreno said. “A huge thanks to all the HUP nurses, clinicians, and volunteers who came out to help.”
