After more than 20 years — and more than 450 issues! — I’ve decided to “hang up” my HUPdate editor’s hat and retire. It was a difficult decision but it’s time.
I’ve always considered HUPdate something of a “hometown paper,” and as its editor, I’ve focused on helping readers see what’s so special about HUP, for example, the many clinical advances and initiatives that came over the years and the consistent recognition of excellence on so many levels.
But, first and foremost, it has been meeting and telling the stories of the people who work here that I’ve loved most: your many outreach efforts, your willingness to go above and beyond (especially during the pandemic), and your never-ending compassion for patients that have led to having in-unit surprise birthday celebrations, bringing in the Phillies Phanatic for a patient who was a big fan, and arranging a wedding for a young woman who was nearing the end of her life, to name just a few.
I can’t tell you my favorite stories because there are so many! Just know that I will miss the job — and the people — but leave with so many wonderful memories. — Sally Sapega
