Over the past 12 years, the HUP Patient Advocacy Awards have recognized more than 120 employees who have consistently gone above and beyond for patients, families and colleagues. These patient advocates, representing areas from throughout the hospital, inspire others through their work.

This year, though, Mona Matson, director of Patient and Guest Services, which oversees the annual recognition celebration, knew she wanted something different. “This year, we are all recipients of the Patient Advocacy Award. We have shown strength, determination, and resilience” she said.

Working with Will Connelly, multimedia producer of Video Services, Matson and her staff created a virtual Advocacy Awards Recognition Ceremony, in which several members of HUP leadership recognized the amazing efforts of staff throughout the pandemic:

“Together we had each other’s back. We didn’t only survive, we thrived, we prevailed,” said CEO Regina Cunningham, PhD, RN. “We learned new ways of doing things — innovative and thinking outside of the box.”

CHRO Denise Mariotti called HUP employees “true heroes. Everyone jumped in and provided extraordinary contributions to help patients and each other.”

In this “challenge like no other, your responses make me proud to work at HUP and proud to call you colleagues,” said Neil Fishman, MD, HUP’s chief medical officer.

“We have so much to be proud of,” Matson said. “We have stuck together, we have helped one another and by walking through the fire, we have come out stronger together. This is who we are. This is what we do. We are Penn Strong.”
