Brian Culp, MD
At Princeton Medical Center (PMC), some patients now have the option for outpatient joint replacement procedures. PMC’s Jim Craigie Center for Joint Replacement recently launched the Outpatient Joint Replacement Program, allowing patients who meet certain criteria to undergo hip or knee replacement surgery and return home just hours later.
The program is under the direction of Brian Culp, MD, a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon affiliated with the Jim Craigie Center, which has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for both hip and knee replacement. The comprehensive program at the Jim Craigie Center also includes inpatient and robotic-assisted surgery, home care, and outpatient physical and occupational therapy.
Candidates for outpatient surgery must be highly motivated to achieve a rapid recovery and have a dependable support network at home and relatively good health, with conditions such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure well controlled.
Patients eligible for same-day joint replacement receive one to two weeks of in-home rehabilitation from licensed therapists with Princeton HomeCare, which, like PMC, is part of Penn Medicine Princeton Health.
Outpatient surgery is available for partial knee replacement, total knee replacement, anterior hip replacement and posterior hip replacement. The procedures are performed at PMC’s ambulatory surgery centers in Plainsboro (adjacent to the hospital) and Monroe.
