Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania

The College Volunteer Program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania provides an opportunity to those on a career path to the medical field an opportunity to gain valuable hospital experience and exposure to medicine at a premiere institution. Sessions run 14 weeks. College Volunteers are expected to attend a weekly four-hour shift at the schedule of their choosing for 12 of the 14 weeks of a session.

The Spring 2018 College Volunteer session will run 1/16/18 to 5/5/18.  Orientation sessions will be held from 4-8pm on 1/16-18.  Attendance at one orientation is mandatory if you are not volunteering during the Fall 2017 session.

You would make a great volunteer if...

  • You are an enrolled undergraduate with an interest in pursuing a career in healthcare. 
  • You have a proactive demeanor and selfless mindset.
  • You have a professional and positive attitude.
  • You can commit to one 4-hour shift per week during a given session.

We offer volunteers...

  • Experience supporting patients, caregivers and staff on inpatient care units.
  • Exposure to professionals administering patient care in a premier hospital.
  • Service to the community.
  • An opportunity to gain a letter of recommendation for participation in an elite hospital program.

We do not provide...

  • Shadowing opportunities.
  • Reimbursement for costs associated with the volunteer application process or program.
  • Free parking.
  • Medical or clinical training.
  • Course credits or internships.

To volunteer you must...

  1. Submit an application, which is not complete until documentation for Step 2 is submitted.
  2. Provide you immunization/vaccination records.
    • MMR – Measles, Mumps, rubella
    • Varicella – Chicken pox
    • TB test within 90 days of your start date
    • Flu vaccination the Spring Session only
  3. Call the Volunteer Services office to dictate your social security number
  4. After Steps 1-3 are complete, Volunteer Services will send an email to invite you to select an assignment and orientation. Shifts will be available on a first-come, first served basis.
  5. Attend orientation prior to the start date
  6. Complete a background check
  7. Pass on-line training modules

When may I apply?

  • Fall Session (September-December), applications open in May
  • Spring Session (January-May), applications open in October
  • Summer Session (May-August), applications open in February

    * All session will close when all assignments have been filled
