On this page, you will find information about some of the privacy choices available at Penn Medicine.

If you have any questions, please contact the Penn privacy office at 215-898-7260 or privacy@uphs.upenn.edu.

Health Information Exchanges (HIEs)

In an effort to improve quality, safety and efficiency of your health care, Penn Medicine participates in Health Information Exchanges (HIEs). HIEs involve coordinated and secure information sharing among HIE members, who may include your health providers at other health care organizations. This information sharing is done for purposes of treatment, payment, and health care operations. Examples of HIE programs Penn currently participates in are Care Everywhere and HSX of Southeastern Pennsylvania.

You may opt-out of some electronic sharing initiatives. If you choose to opt-out, Penn Medicine will use reasonable efforts to limit the sharing of PHI in such electronic sharing initiatives, including Care Everywhere and HSX of Southeastern Pennsylvania.

To request that your health information not be shared through HIEs, please inform your patient service representative.

As an academic medical center, Penn Medicine conducts clinical research. You may be contacted with an invitation to participate in certain research activities. However, you have the ability to request to not be contacted for research initiatives. If you request to not be contacted, we will use reasonable efforts to prevent this research-related outreach. Please note that a request to not be contacted for these types of studies will not apply to the use of your data for research purposes as described in the Notice of Privacy Practices and will not prevent your care providers from discussing research with you.

If you do not wish to be contacted for research purposes, please inform your patient service representative.

Special Medical Record Viewing Protections

To ensure high-quality clinical care, Penn Medicine allows for relevant medical record information to be available to many caregivers throughout the Penn Medicine system. Special protections can be applied to minimize the chance of your records being accessed accidentally and/or inappropriately.

To have special protections applied to your records, please inform your patient service representative.
