Combined expertise for a collaborative approach to spine care

When you’re in pain, going about your daily life can feel impossible. At Penn Medicine, our team of experts work closely with our patients and their families to learn more about the causes of their back or neck pain, discuss treatment options, and engage in shared decision-making to create a plan that addresses all their needs.

Because spine and neck pain can affect many areas of your body, we incorporate a collaborative approach to care using the expertise of doctors across multiple specialties. Whether you need physical therapy or spine surgery, our team guides you every step of the way, from evaluation through recovery.

Recognized excellence in spine care

The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Pennsylvania Hospital, and Lancaster General Hospital are designated as Blue Distinction Centers for spine surgery. This means that these centers offer comprehensive spine surgery services and provide quality care that leads to lower readmission and fewer repeat surgeries. Additionally, Princeton Medical Center has an Advanced Spine Certification designation from The Joint Commission.

At our Spine Centers, we have expert teams trained in neurosurgery, orthopedics, pain medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and other specialties to provide you with complete care for your spinal condition. These experts connect directly with the providers at our community hospitals and outpatient locations across the Greater Philadelphia, Lancaster, and South Jersey areas so that you have access to the latest spine pain treatment options close to home.

Second opinions

If you've received a diagnosis, our team of experts offers second opinions to grant you peace of mind.

Virtual appointments

We offer virtual appointments for low-risk neurosurgical procedures.

Advanced treatment options

Effective spine care starts with an accurate diagnosis, and our team uses the latest diagnostic technology to determine the precise cause of your back or neck pain. We excel at diagnosing all types of neck and spine conditions using a multidisciplinary approach. This means our spine specialists are leaders in the fields of neurosurgery, neurology, neurophysiology, orthopedic surgery, pain medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and behavioral medicine and work together to provide an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan.

Spine conditions we treat

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS)

Our Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Program promotes a positive experience and quick recovery after spine or peripheral nerve surgery. This is the only program like it in the region and is one of the first of its kind in the nation within neurosurgery. The program enables physicians to closely identify potential risks during all phases of treatment and recovery, maximize the benefits of surgery, and allow for quicker recovery times, better outcomes, and a positive overall experience.

By taking part in the program, you will:

  • Be evaluated before and immediately following surgery, as well as during the recovery period
  • Focus on moving after surgery as quickly as appropriate to speed up the healing process and shorten your hospital stay
  • Benefit from the partnership of your surgeon and primary care provider to ensure you receive thorough follow-up care, close to home
