Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections

What are platelet-rich plasma injections?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are a treatment that uses a patient’s platelets to promote tissue function and restoration. Platelets are small, disc-shaped cells in the blood that play a critical role in clotting and healing. They contain growth factors that can stimulate tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and speed recovery. PRP is often used for sports injuries, arthritis, skin rejuvenation, and hair loss.

Who is a candidate for PRP injections?

People eligible for platelet-rich plasma injections are typically those seeking treatment for various conditions that may benefit from enhanced healing and tissue regeneration. PRP injections are often recommended for:

  • Athletes or active individuals with soft tissue injuries
  • Patients with arthritis looking to reduce pain and improve joint function
  • People with chronic pain in areas like the shoulder, hip, knee, or lower back
  • Those with hair loss conditions to stimulate hair growth
  • Individuals recovering from surgery who want to accelerate the healing process in tissues like tendons or muscles

PRP injections are generally considered for people who have not responded well to treatments like physical therapy, rest, or medications. However, PRP may not be for everyone. Talk with your care team to determine if PRP therapy is right for you.

What to expect when you get a PRP injection

Platelet-rich plasma is created by removing a small amount of your blood, processing it to isolate the platelets, and then injecting the concentrated platelets into the area that needs treatment.

During the procedure, you can expect:

  • A small amount of blood is drawn from your arm, like during a routine blood test.
  • The collected blood is placed in a machine called a centrifuge, which spins it at high speeds. This process separates the blood into different components: red blood cells, plasma, and platelets. The platelet-rich plasma is then removed for use.
  • Depending on the area being treated, local anesthesia may be applied to reduce discomfort during the injection.
  • The concentrated PRP is injected directly into the targeted area, such as joints, tendons, muscles, skin, or scalp.
  • The entire process typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes.

In some cases, you may need multiple PRP sessions for the best results. Your provider will talk to you about the best treatment plan for your specific situation.

Recovering from a PRP injection

Recovering from PRP injections is usually a straightforward process, though it varies depending on the area treated and the condition being addressed.

  • Mild soreness, swelling, or stiffness at the injection site is common for the first few days.
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory medications, as they can interfere with the healing process PRP is meant to support.
  • It’s best to avoid strenuous activities for a day or two following the injection. Light movements or stretching may be recommended to help recovery depending on the area treated.

PRP stimulates healing, but improvements may take a few weeks to become noticeable, with full benefits often appearing over several months. Your health-care provider may schedule a follow-up visit to monitor progress.

PRP injection risks

PRP injections carry minimal risk of infection, and serious side effects or complications are extremely rare. While minor pain at the injection site is common in the short term, it can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
