Brain Tumor

In His Own Words

Stephen Gunn, a patient of Eric L. Zager, MD, was recently treated for a brain tumor. His email is shown here with his permission.

Dear Dr. Grady,

Please accept this letter of appreciation on behalf of my family and me relating to my recent procedure and hospital stay.

Eric Zager, MD and his excellent surgical team performed, what I believe to be, a very successful brain tumor operation. I am feeling good and looking forward to recovering well and getting back to normal.

I truly appreciate Dr. Zager and his spectacular team taking the time to go over all instructions, explain everything to me and answer any questions my family and I had prior to the procedure. They really helped keep my optimism and spirit high while I prepared myself mentally for the operation.

I would also like to thank the nurses, doctors, maintenance, meal service and transport staff for making my stay at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania as comfortable as possible. Please thank them again for me for their fine professional care during my most difficult time. I firmly believe that their kindness and willingness to help me deal with my traumatic issue contributed greatly to my successful procedure.

One of the most impressive things I noted throughout my stay was how the entire staff worked so well together. I remember seeing the hospital's mission statement regarding patient care on the wall and noting time and time again how each staff member followed it to a tee. Regardless of their job descriptions, each person assisted one another when other task priorities were present. For example, if I asked a nurse to get me some ice or a pair of socks and she was busy, a maintenance person in the room would pleasantly say "I will get it for you". You could see that, not only did everyone care about the patients, but they cared about one another as well.

Everyone associated with Penn Medicine should be extremely proud of your personnel. I firmly believe that the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania is a model of a well-run, diverse workplace that strives for continuous excellent patient care and employee morale.

Thanks Again,
Stephen J. Gunn
