About the Penn Thyroid Center

Endocrinologists at the Penn Thyroid Center specialize in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating thyroid disorders such as thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, thyroiditis, thyroid disease in pregnancy, hyperthyroidism, and hypothyroidism.

Led by Dr. Susan Mandel, an international expert in thyroid disorders and thyroid cancer care, our team includes experienced clinicians and leading specialists. We use a multidisciplinary approach, working with experts in oncology, radiology, surgery, pathology, and nuclear medicine to create personalized treatment plans.

At Penn, you will also have access to clinical trials for thyroid cancer and other thyroid disorders. These trials offer new treatments that could improve your condition and contribute to important research.

Clinical trials

Clinical trials offer patients the opportunity to try new and effective treatments and take part in future research.

Second opinions

If you've received a diagnosis, our team of experts offers second opinions to grant you peace of mind.

Thyroid nodule clinic

Over 12 million Americans have thyroid nodules that need medical evaluation, and the incidence of thyroid cancer is rising rapidly.

For patients needing a thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNA), the Thyroid Nodule Clinic at the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine provides on-site evaluation and FNA with a team of an endocrinologist, radiologist, and pathologist. Some endocrinologists also perform thyroid FNA in their offices.

Dr. Mandel established Penn’s thyroid nodule clinic, the only one in the region. The clinic uses the latest diagnostic and imaging technology to diagnose and treat thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. The multidisciplinary team provides quick and comprehensive evaluations, often giving preliminary reports on the same day.
