Virtual specialty care

Seeing a specialist often requires advanced planning. You may live far from the clinic, are transporting a loved one with mobility challenges, or need to take time off work. We’ve removed barriers to specialty care, making things simpler for you and your family.

With clinicians in more than 60 programs and services providing virtual care, you can see a Penn Medicine provider with the expertise you need.

You can see a Penn Medicine specialist on a tablet, computer, or laptop. If your provider doesn’t need to see you, you may have the option to schedule a phone call.

You’ll schedule your appointment through a secure patient portal—MyChart by myPennMedicine or MyLGHealth, depending on your provider's practice location.. All your personal and medical information remains confidential, just as during an in-person visit.

You can visit with a specialist to discuss a new diagnosis, learn ways to manage a chronic disease, or figure out what test or procedure you need. Our specialists help you understand your condition and advise you on the next steps.

Your initial visit may have been in person. Subsequent telehealth visits with your specialist may address your progress, update your medications, and address your concerns.

You may qualify for virtual visits if your recovery from surgery is going well. Your provider will ask about your healing, do a pain assessment, and go over incision care. They may also prescribe additional medication and discuss the next steps to your recovery.

Some specialty evaluations, including transplant living donor evaluations and varicose vein screenings, can be in a video visit. Speak with your specialist to see if they offer remote screenings or assessments.

You may want a second opinion to confirm a diagnosis, seek alternative therapies, or explore procedure options. Our specialists review your medical details, answer your submitted questions, and deliver a full written report within five business days. No video visit is required.

You can speak to a genetic counselor through a phone call or secure video visit. Your counselor does a remote screening, helps you understand your genetic test results, and answers your questions. We offer cancer telegenetics and cardiac telegenetics services.

Connect with people going through a similar health-related experience. We offer virtual support groups where you can safely connect with others, share coping skills, and form meaningful relationships. Speak with your provider about online support groups that are appropriate for you.

If you have trouble sleeping, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) may help. An insomnia specialist will do an evaluation during your initial in-person visit at Penn Sleep Center Market Street. If you qualify for CBT-I, you will have eight weekly follow-up visits, which can be done via video. You can switch back to in-person visits if you wish at any time.

Our movement disorders program is one of the largest and busiest in the U.S. You have access to Penn Medicine providers with extensive experience treating movement disorders in people of all ages.

We help you improve mobility and independence through effective therapies and exercises. Virtual visits are available to people who can’t travel to the Movement Disorders Center for care.

Veterans and their family members can receive behavioral health services online. You’ll have secure video visits with a licensed therapist with expertise in veteran care. We help you navigate and manage anxiety, depression, anger, and grief.
