Pre-procedure COVID testing must be performed within three days of your scheduled procedure. We highly recommend getting tested at one of the Penn Medicine locations listed below to make sure you get the right COVID test and to make it easier for us to review your results.

Testing outside of the Penn Medicine health system is permitted, but you must request to have a PCR test, and only a SARS- COV-2 PCR Nasal or oral swab will be accepted. Antibody and antigen tests are not acceptable for pre-procedure testing and clearance. Patients who choose to have testing outside of Penn Medicine are responsible for sending their results to their Penn provider. Results can be shared via myPennMedicine or direct contact with the provider performing your procedure. They must be sent at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled procedure date.

If you are given a referral, please call 267-414-2303 to schedule your test. We answer the phones on Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm and on Sunday from 8 am to 4:30 pm.

Testing Results

If the SARS-CoV-2 virus associated with COVID-19 was not detected in your test, your surgery will proceed as planned.

If you test positive, you and your surgeon will make a decision regarding whether you can safely delay your procedure. We have practices in place to be able to perform emergency surgeries safely on patients with COVID-19.
