Types of lung infections
There are many types of infections that occur in the lungs. They can be caused by contagious bacteria, a virus, or fungi in the air we breathe.
These infections occur when bacteria enter the lungs, often when your body’s immune system is weakened.
Types of bacterial infections include:
- Pneumococcal pneumonia
- Empyema of the pleura
- Pulmonary nocardiosis
Mycobacteria can cause chronic lung infections, especially in people with weakened immune systems or those on immunosuppressive therapy. These infections are particularly difficult to treat because mycobacteria resist many antibiotics.
Common mycobacterial infections include:
- Pulmonary tuberculosis
- Leprosy (Hansen’s Disease)
Viral lung infections are illnesses caused by viruses that infect the lungs, leading to inflammation, coughing, and breathing difficulties.
Types of viral infections include:
- Bronchiolitis
- Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
- Influenza (flu)
- COVID-19
- Viral pneumonia (caused by adenoviruses, rhinoviruses, or parainfluenza viruses)
Fungal lung infections occur when inhaled fungal spores infect the lungs, often causing respiratory symptoms and posing a greater risk to people with weakened immune systems.
Types of fungal lung infections include:
- Histoplasmosis
- Aspergillosis
- Coccidioidomycosis
- Blastomycosis
- Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP)
Chronic lung diseases and other types of lung conditions can be aggravated by bacterial or viral infections, including:
