How hydrocephalus affects the body
Symptoms of hydrocephalus vary with age.
Between infancy and older age, hydrocephalus can cause a range of neurological and other symptoms, such as:
- Blurred or double vision
- Headaches
- Loss of bladder control
- Nausea and vomiting
- Problems with balance, coordination, speech or memory
- Sleepiness
In infants born with hydrocephalus, signs may include:
- Fixed downward gaze
- Irritability
- Large head or bulging fontanel (the soft spot on the top of the head)
- Problems feeding
- Seizures
- Sleepiness
- Vomiting
In older adults, symptoms usually get worse over time. They can include:
- Difficulty walking or slow shuffling
- Loss of bladder control
- Memory problems or dementia
- Problems with balance and coordination
- Tremor or shaking
