Myeloproliferative Neoplasms Diagnostic Tools

The following diagnostics tools and tests may be used to diagnose myeloproliferative neoplasms.

  • Medical history
  • Physical exam
  • Complete blood count in which a sample of blood is drawn and checked for the number of red blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells
  • Genetic sequencing through Penn Medicine’s Center for Personalized Medicine that identifies genomic alterations
  • Specific genetic mutation testing, including mutations in JAK2, Calreticulin or Mpl genes
  • Peripheral blood smear: A procedure in which a sample of blood is checked to see how the blood appears under a microscope, and if there are blasts (immature blood cells)
  • Blood chemistry studies
  • Bone marrow biopsy
  • Cytogenetic analysis
