Conditions treated by CAR T therapy

Reshaping disease treatment with CAR T cell therapy

Traditional cancer treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy have long been the cornerstone of cancer care. CAR T cell therapy is the latest advancement in cancer care that has expanded options for patients. This type of immunotherapy, which harnesses the body’s immune system to treat cancerous growths, has demonstrated promising results in shrinking and even eliminating tumors in some patients with advanced cancer. CAR T cell therapy has shown a remarkable ability to treat advanced multiple myelomas and lymphomas, offering advantages such as faster recovery times compared to stem cell transplants that were the traditional treatment option. Clinical trials have highlighted the ability of CAR T cell therapy to induce long-lasting remissions, even in patients with recurrent cancer.

While not yet FDA approved, researchers continue to look to the future of CAR T therapy by studying the treatment’s effect on conditions such as glioblastoma (brain cancer), synovial sarcoma, breast cancer, lupus, and heart failure.

FDA-approved CAR T cell therapies

Currently, seven CAR T cell therapies have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in treating various cancer types in adults and children. While CAR T therapy has been proven to be an effective treatment for some blood cancers, it is not currently recommended for all cancers. Penn Medicine researchers are conducting clinical trials for additional gene and cell immunotherapies that may be available in the future to treat many conditions. If you have a cancer type that can be treated with CAR T therapy, your doctor will discuss the appropriate treatment options with you. We offer several T cell therapy options to patients who might benefit.
