Specialty clinics for advanced liver care
Penn Medicine offers several specialty clinics designed to support people with complex liver conditions. These programs bring together experts from multiple disciplines, provide coordinated care in one place, and offer access to advanced treatments, innovative devices, and ongoing support.
The Liver Tumor Clinic provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for benign and malignant liver tumors. You receive care from a team of liver specialists, including hepatologists, liver and biliary surgeons, interventional radiologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists. These experts review cases together and create individualized treatment plans.
Care may include surgery (resection), ablation, liver-directed therapies, systemic therapy, or referral for liver transplant when appropriate. This team-based model, supported by high-volume liver surgery and interventional expertise, helps manage complex or previously “inoperable” cases and expands access to curative options when possible.
The Comprehensive Ascites Clinic supports people with cirrhosis who have difficult-to-manage (refractory) ascites. The clinic brings hepatology, interventional radiology, nephrology, nutrition, and palliative care together in one coordinated setting.
Patients may receive treatments such as large-volume paracentesis, diuretic adjustment, TIPS evaluation, and dietary counseling. The clinic also provides access to innovative devices, such as an automatic pump that moves fluid from the abdomen to the bladder, to improve comfort and reduce repeat hospital or emergency visits. The goal is to improve quality of life and deliver consistent, evidence-based care for those with advanced liver disease.
iLEARN is a co-located, multidisciplinary clinic for people with alcohol-associated liver disease who are being evaluated for liver transplant. Hepatologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and addiction counselors work together to provide seamless, long-term support before and after transplant.
The clinic focuses on helping patients stabilize their health, navigate the transplant process, and build the strongest foundation for long-term recovery and post-transplant success.
