Clotting disorders and recurrent miscarriages
Inherited bleeding and clotting disorders can sometimes cause heavy menstrual bleeding or recurrent miscarriages. However, these complications often have other underlying causes.
At the Penn Medicine Center for Women’s Thrombosis and Hemostasis, we provide the expertise needed to identify the connection between bleeding disorders and these challenges. Our team asks the right questions, offers comprehensive evaluations, and delivers sensitive, personalized care.
Inherited clotting disorders may lead to recurrent miscarriages by restricting blood flow to the placenta. Preventive medications can improve the chances of a healthy pregnancy and delivery.
If you’ve experienced multiple miscarriages, our team can help determine if a comprehensive evaluation is right for you.
Bleeding disorders like hemophilia and von Willebrand disease can cause menorrhagia, leading to:
- Bleeding lasting more than seven days
- Needing a new pad or tampon hourly or more
- Blood flow overwhelming sanitary products
- Passing frequent or large blood clots
For some, heavy periods may be the first or only symptom of an inherited bleeding disorder. Other symptoms, like frequent nosebleeds, may also occur.
In the past, heavy periods were often dismissed or treated with hysterectomy. Today, other causes such as uterine growths, hormonal imbalances, or medications are first ruled out. If no clear cause is found, our hematologists can evaluate for bleeding disorders.
At Penn Medicine, we collaborate with gynecologists and specialists to uncover the cause of heavy menstrual bleeding. Diagnostic steps include:
- Reviewing your medical and family history
- Conducting blood tests, including genetic testing
- Scheduling pelvic exams and imaging
Treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding may involve birth control or other standard therapies. A bleeding disorder diagnosis can guide additional care, such as planning for pregnancy or surgery. Hematologists may prescribe medications to support clot formation and reduce bleeding risks.
At Penn Medicine, our integrated approach ensures you receive expert, compassionate care for bleeding and clotting disorders.
