Comprehensive, patient-focused care for uterine fibroid relief

People with uterine fibroids have different symptoms and experiences. At Penn Medicine, we tailor fibroid care and treatment to your specific needs.

We offer integrated care with specialists across many disciplines within our health system. You have access to experts in gynecology, gynecological surgery, radiology, and fertility who all specialize in fibroid care. We listen to your concerns and partner with you to create a treatment plan that reaches your health goals.

Advanced solutions for fibroid management at Penn Medicine

Our team of fibroid specialists has decades of experience helping people find relief. We are particularly aware of the needs of Black women, who are three times more likely to have fibroids than white women, and often have more severe symptoms.

Your unique care plan will depend on several factors, including your age, symptoms, and whether you plan to get pregnant in the future. Our gynecology providers offer a range of treatments for people with smaller fibroids. Your provider may recommend hormone treatments like birth control pills, intrauterine devices (IUDs), or hormone injections. Your treatment may also include pain-relieving medication or iron supplements to treat or prevent anemia if you have heavy periods.

If you have larger fibroids or need more complex care, doctors within the Penn Center for Integrated Fibroid Care offer advanced and effective treatments. Our specialists have expertise in minimally invasive surgeries, including laparoscopic and robotic-assisted myomectomy, which allows you to keep your uterus.

Tailored treatments for uterine fibroids

Fibroid care at Penn Medicine includes non-surgical treatments like hormone therapies and medication, as well as minimally invasive and uterine-sparing procedures. We also offer traditional open or minimally invasive hysterectomy to remove the uterus. This option may be ideal for people who have completed their family.

Our specialists work together to deliver streamlined care that’s best for you and your health goals.

Fertility care for people with fibroids

While uncommon, fibroids can impact fertility. If you have fibroids and are unable to get pregnant, we offer comprehensive fertility and reproductive care services. Our experts will determine the appropriate treatment options, including fertility preservation before having surgical treatment for fibroids.
